What do you know about entrepreneurship?

The concept of entrepreneurship has a wide range of meanings. On the
one extreme an entrepreneur is a person of very high aptitude who pioneers
change, on the other Extreme of definition, anyone who wants to work for
himself or herself is considered to be an Entrepreneur. The word entrepreneur
originates from the French word, entrepreneur, which Means “to undertake”. In a
business context, it means to start a business. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary
presents the definition of an entrepreneur as one who organizes, Manages, and
assumes the risks of a business or enterprise. Entrepreneurship is the process of
starting a business, typically a start-up company offering an innovative
product, process or service. The entrepreneur perceives an opportunity and often exhibits
biases in taking the decision to exploit the opportunity. The exploitation of entrepreneurial
opportunities includes design actions to develop a business plans acquired the human,
financial and other required resources, and to be responsible for its success or failure.
Entrepreneurship may operate within an entrepreneurship ecosystem which includes
government programs and services that support entrepreneurs, entrepreneurship
resources, entrepreneurship education and training and financing. However, individuals who
involved in entrepreneurship should have the entrepreneurial traits such as networked,
open risk taker, observant, visionary, failure is an option, open culture, outcomes oriented,
team oriented and proactive. There are few examples of successful entrepreneurs who have
the entrepreneurial traits as noted.

Networked- Dato’ Shahriman Shamsuddin and Tan Sri Shahril Shamsuddin 



  • Dato’ Shahriman Shamsuddin 
  • Age 40
  • President and Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and to the Board as Independent Non-Executive Director in 2011. 
  • Dato’ Shahriman began his career with Sapura Group in 1991. 
  • Dato’ Shahriman holds a Master of Science in Industrial Technology from Purdue University, United States of America.
  • Tan Sri Shahril Shamsuddin
  • Age 52 
  • Chief Executive Officer of Sapura Kencana Petroleum Berhad group. 
  • It takes a lot of effort for him and his partner, Tan Sri Mokhzani to lead the company to be where it is now. 
  • Entering his personal life, he loves to cook and often went to travel with his wife, Mrs. Sri Yazreen Yahya.
  • Now, Tan Sri Shahril holds about 20% of the Sapura Holdings, and share price of RM3.79 of Sapura Kencana, Shahril is worth about RM4.5 billion.

Open risk taker-Tan Sri Datuk Haji Mustapha 


  • A risk taker itself define as an individual or business that tends to behave in a way that can potentially cause physical harm or financial loss, but might also present an opportunity for a rewarding outcome (source: Wikipedia)
  • Tan Sri Datuk Haji Mustapha Kamal is a graduate from University of Malaya.
  • After he graduated from that local university, he served as the assistant district officers in the governmental sector in the state of Selangor at the District and Land office.
  • He became the managing director of Shah Alam Properties Sdn. Bhd. soon after he resigned from the government sector to private sector.
  • He work very hard in doing work because he wanted to strengthen his work quality, skills, knowledge, experiences and expertise in order to increase the confident level in developing new business as majoring in business is not easy. 
  • These sides of Tan Sri Datuk Haji Mustapha Kamal lead to the establishment of EMKAY Group Company at 1983.
  • MK Land Holdings is known as Perfect Food Industries Sdn. Bhd. engaged in the manufacture and sale of biscuits and foodstuffs through their factory in Melaka. 
  • After listing on the KLSE it is called Perfect Food Industries Berhad and finally, the name was changed to MK Land Holdings Berhad on 27 August 1999.

Failure is an option - Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Shah



  • Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Shah bin Syed Nor Al-Bukhary.
  • Seventh richest people in Malaysia, with property valued at RM2.93 billion. 
  • In 1970, he started his carrier as a businessman where he first learned business from his father. 
  • He was born third from total of seven siblings, in 1952 at Alor Star, Kedah, Malaysia and living a middle class family.
  • He began to involve in business field by selling “roti canai” and helped his father raise cattle and buffalo.He then left Kedah because of some disease problem in his hometown. 
  • In 1970 at the age of 19, he started his own business as an entrepreneur beef and buffalo meat. This is his first failure because of the product he wanted to sell is not marketable so he needed to sell it back to native traders and restaurants around Alor Setar. 
  • We should take example of him, he never learned the meaning of give up. He then opened the transport company “Syarikat Pengangkutan Sentosa” to start a rice business. 
  • In 2008, he was announced as the Maal Hijrah 1429H in Maal Hijrah celebrations at the national level Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC).
  • He is also the Chairman of the Yayasan Albukhary. This Al-Bukhary Foundation was established in March 1996 as a charity which helped the poor, support the development of Islamic art and culture as well as promoting understanding between civilizations.
  • For Syed Mokhtar, failure is an option because he never knew about failure in his life and always learns from mistakes. He added that whoever we are, each of us needs to do kindness regardless how small it is. Success and wealth are belongs to Allah and we need to use it in the right way. He also stressed that whatever consequences that we may end up, never use religion for granted. When he has a problem, he can solve it calmly and wisely because to develop a strong and named business, we need to be patient and hard working.
  • He took off his own example that starts from the bottom with the help of his father who sold cattle and buffalo in the village before reaching the stage now. “If we go through the hard way, then we will find a way to appreciate and love,” he explained briefly.

Observant-Datuk Wan Mohammad Sani Salleh


  • Owner of the uprising bus operations, Sani Express.
  • Sani Express, a red and white bus which began to operate in 2006, now has 150 employees and operates in Wisma Dato’ Sani in Klang Sentral.
  • At age 35, he had already holds multiple certifications including Young Entrepreneurs, which is crowned by the award-Malay Traders and Entrepreneurs Association of Malaysia (Perdasama).
  •  In fact he is considered as the young generation’s icon in the business world today.
  • Although this young man deserves to be called a millionaire, he would prefer to be humble and say what he has given today is a gift from Allah SWT.
  •  At the time when he had only one employee, he had to make full use of his energy and thoughts, all plans to start operating the dreamed express buses only show results after three years of hard work and with capital from financial institutions.
  • According to Sani, other than interest, other factor that contributes to this success is his attitude which is not ashamed to ask and often learn from anyone.

  • The President and Chief Executive Officer of Petronas since 1995 to 2010.
  • First joined this company as Senior Vice President of Finance from 1989 to 1995.
  • Also a partner of an accounting firm named Hanafiah, Raslan & Mohamad (Touche Ross & Co) from 1981 to 1989.
  • Someone who emphasise the importance of teamwork and stressed that all his workers need to meet high standards of loyalty, integrity and professionalism and cohesiveness.
  • He worked closely and received the trust of Malaysia’s prime minister that time which was Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad.
  • He managed to balances the identity of Petronas as a national company with its vision which is “To be a Leading Oil and Gas Multinational of Choice”.
  • He brought Petronas from a small oil company, to become the top 500 companies in terms of income returns as published in Fortune Global 500 as par as SHELL and ESSO.
  • He had brought Petronas into the automotive industry by introducing the first commercial engine in Malaysia.
  • He is also concerns towards the environment and lead Petronas to introduce Enviro 2000 that is environmental-friendly vehicle which uses natural gas.

Visionary-Datuk Maznah Hamid





  • Visionary means a person who is always forward thinking about what to do in the future for success. 
  • Air hitam, Kedah Darul Aman is the place where Datuk Maznah Hamid was born.
  • She married to Datuk Shaheen Mirza and they have five children together. 
  • Iron lady Malaysia is the title for Datuk Maznah Hamid as she is much known as successful entrepreneur, business woman and a motivational author and speaker.
  • In her early days, she employed a guard with herself being jack of all trades in small outfit. 
  • Datuk Maznah and her husband willing to sold their own house and moved to a new house, smaller place than before which come without proper amenities in order to expand their business. This shows that she sacrifice a lot for her business.
  • Her company has to compete with other licensed security companies in Malaysia as many of them were established up. Her company survived among hundreds of other company and become the success company ever.

  • Soichiro Honda is been open culture which means he had been developed, altering and enriching his works on the basis of sharing and collaboration.
  • In terms of globalization, the consequence is that all people should have same access to information.  this we can see through its first domination in 1959 in the U.S is known as American Honda Motor Co. Inc in Las Angeles.
  • Honda’s enlargement into new U.S. markets had creating new demand for motorcycles which means than Honda already spread freely his product without any barriers.
  • The product didn’t  sold that much  so Honda held the “You Meet the Nicest People on a Honda” advertising and focusing on Americans and at the end successfully sold 100 000 units of his product.
  • Development made the company to move to a new headquarters facility in Gardena and California. The total unit sales in 1964 produced nearly half of the United State motorcycle market in 1963.
  • The death of Soichiro Honda on August 5, 1991  of liver failure made them to  re-organized the company’s global operations and succeed to create 4 regional operations including North America and Honda also had employed more than 25 000 associates in the United State.

  • goal must be focused, measurable, attainable, result-oriented and time-targeted, or SMART

Proactive -Tan Sri Azaman Hashim


  • Tan Sri Azman Hashim was appointed to the Board of AMMB Holding Berhad on 15 August 1991. 
  • chairman of the board of several subsidiaries of the company which is namely AmBank (M) Berhad, Amlnvestment Bank Berhad, AmBank Islamic Berhad (formerly known as AmIslamic Bank Berhad)
  • has vast experience in the banking industry and began working in the banking sector. 
  • Proactive individuals will not wait for instruction from the top management but tried for looking for effective ideas. 
  • confident with themselves to deal with any changes that are happening around.

Soichiro Honda Biography


  • Founder of Honda Motor Company
  • When Honda was a small child, one of his dreams is to compete in motor vehicle races all over the world with a vehicle of his own making and win. Even as a toddler he had been captivated by the first car that was ever seen in his village and often used to say in later life that he could never forget the smell of oil it gave off. Of course every success it begins with failure like Soichiro Honda ones said that “Success represents that 1% of your work which results from the 99% of failure”. Honda had been turned down by Toyota Motor Corporation when he went for interviewing for a job as an engineer which he end up being jobless for quite some time. What he do to achieve his dream? Honda has been helping his father repair agriculture equipment in the workshop of his father and he also could stand for hours just to observe the working of rice milling and he do a lot of things that related with vehicles to achieve his dreams.
  • Soichiro Honda was born on November 17, 1906 in Tenryu Shizuoka small village under Mount Fuji. Honda’s father, Gihei a blacksmith has his own bicycle repair business which Honda had spent with his early childhood to help his father. Honda’s family was not rich, but his father teaches his children the ethic of hard work, and a love of mechanical things. He later learned how to make his own toys. In 1917, a pilot named Art Smith flew into the Wachiyama military airfield to demonstrate his biplane's aerobatic capabilities. Honda went to the demonstration by borrowing his father’s bicycles and also took the family’s money. Honda willing to take the risk only to go to see the demonstration and do not scared been scold by his father. Honda was a visionary person because he knows what he want to be in future and he know what was he doing on his life.
  • Honda left his home and went to Tokyo to look for work at only age of 15 and without any formal education. In 1922, he get an apprenticeship at a garage and he stayed there for six years working as a car mechanic before returning to his home to start his own auto repair business in 1928 at the age of 22.
  • In 1959, Honda Motorcycles opening its first dealership in the United State is known as American Honda Motor Co., Inc  on 11 June in los Angeles  with the capital of $250,000. this action shows that Honda being open culture which he developing and enriching not only to his company but also in his knowledge of sharing it to other people. Honda's enlargement into new United state markets had creating new demand for motorcycles which means that Honda already spread freely his product without any barriers .
  • Soichiro and his wife had owned pilot's licenses even though at older age and Honda enjoyed ballooning, skiing at age of 77, mostly people at this age they did not participate at that kind of activities. Lastly, Honda died on August 5, 1991 because of liver failure in Tokyo's Juntendo Hospital at aged 84 years and eight months.
